Joshua Bershad, MD
Joshua Bershad, MD, MBA is Vice Chair of the Board of Directors and Medical Director. At Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, he is Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer and President of RWJ Physician Enterprise.
Dr. Bershad is very involved in education and clinical care at Rutgers and RWJ. He is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he has been recognized with an award for Excellence in Teaching. He is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Rutgers University, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. Dr. Bershad continues to serve as an attending on the medical teaching service at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Dr. Bershad is a member of the Board of Directors of the Middlesex County Medical Society, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Robert Wood Johnson Visiting Nurses, Inc., and is a member of the Board of the VNA Health Group.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Geology from SUNY Binghamton in Binghamton, New York and earned his medical degree at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School. He completed his internal medicine residency and chief residency at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and is board certified in internal medicine. He has an MBA from Rutgers.
Senior Vice President
With over 25 years of experience as a healthcare executive, Po Chou serves as a Senior Vice President for RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH). In this role, he has dual leadership responsibilities, both as: 1) the Senior Vice President for Population Health – overseeing the deployment of the RWJBH Clinically Integrated Network (CIN) and its Accountable Care operations; and 2) the Chief Financial Officer for Physician Services – overseeing finance, accounting, and revenue cycle for the medical group.
Prior to joining RWJBH, Po served in executive leadership roles for various for-profit, not-for-profit, academic, population health, and advisory organizations inclusive of Tenet Healthcare, The University of Texas Medical School, The George Washington University School of Medicine, The Renaissance Health Network (a Pioneer ACO organization), Navvis Healthcare (a division of Healthways), and the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC. During his career, he has developed special industry expertise in strategic management, operations, finance, business and clinical analytics, and hospital/physician/managed care systems. These experiences included successful start-ups and turn-arounds of several health systems, BCBS and provider owned health plans, physician enterprises with over 1,500 physicians, and Management Services Organization managing over 700,000 delegated commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid lives in IPA, PHO, and other provider vehicles.
More recently, he has worked in the development and operationalization of new care delivery models with both the private and public sectors, inclusive of Government Sponsored Programs (Medicare Advantage, Medicaid Managed Care, et al) and Government Care Innovation Programs (ACO, Bundled Payments, MACRA/MIPS/AAPM, CPC+, et al).
A graduate of George Washington University, Po holds both a MPH and a MS from the University of Texas, and completed his doctoral studies at the University of Texas for both a Dr.P.H. (Health Services Research) and a Ph.D. (Management & Policy Sciences with a concentration in Healthcare Finance).
Cathryn Heath, MD
Cathryn B Heath, MD, FAAFP is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health for 18 years. She has been a clinician educator in Family Medicine for over 30 years. She graduated from Lehigh University and Drexel (formerly Hahnemann) School of Medicine in a 6 year BA/MD program. During her time at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, she implemented a Family Medicine Maternity Care Service at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Peter’s University Hospital. She also initiated the first Family Medicine Maternity Care Fellowship in New Jersey. Dr. Heath became the Medical Director of the primary practice site of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in 2002, where she led the effort to attain Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home designation from the NCQA, the first residency program to be so designated in New Jersey.
Dr. Heath has led the department’s special programs in quality improvement, including its participation in the Horizon Health Innovation’s Patient Centered Medical Home project, the first academic partner in Horizon’s program. She is currently a board member of the Horizon Health Innovations project. Due to Dr. Heath’s efforts, Family Medicine at Monument Square became a designated site for the Comprehensive Primary Care initiative project, a multi-year CMS grant to improve quality, accessibility and decrease cost of patient care. This designation includes only two other academic primary care sites and is the only mixed residency-faculty practice within the program, which spans across 7 regions and includes 500 practices.
Dr. Heath has also worked within the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group to improve quality and patient care. She is an active member of the Clinical care and Operations committee, policy and procedure subcommittee, communication subcommittee, and the leadership committee of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. She has published and nationally taught lectures on Women’s Health as well as Practice Management.
